Cardioversion

Restoring A Normal Heart Rhythm

Our Oracle Heart & Vascular providers may recommend cardioversion to help restore a normal rhythm for patients diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, also called an arrhythmia. Cardioversion is a planned procedure that uses a brief, controlled electrical shock to “reset” the heart’s rhythm. Oracle Heart & Vascular is committed to delivering high-quality, personalized care in a supportive environment, and the procedure is performed with light sedation with your comfort in mind.

What Is Cardioversion?

Cardioversion is a non-invasive procedure that helps an abnormal heart rhythm return to a normal rhythm. It is commonly used atrial fibrillation (AFib) and atrial flutter, as well as supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), in some cases.

Sometimes the procedure is combined with a Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) to confirm there are no blood clots in the heart before restoring rhythm. Your provider may also discuss medications before and after cardioversion, such as blood thinners (anticoagulants) and/or antiarrhythmics.

Who Needs Cardioversion?

Your Oracle provider will review your history, medications and risk factors to determine whether it is right for you. We may recommend cardioversion if you:

  • Have AFib or another arrhythmia that is causing symptoms such as palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath and dizziness

  • Have a persistent abnormal rhythm that isn’t improving with medication alone

  • Need rhythm control to support heart function and quality of life

What To Expect

Cardioversion itself is typically very brief, but plan for additional time for preparation and recovery. You’ll be connected to monitoring equipment (heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen levels). Our team will administer sedation to help you rest comfortably. Our cardiologist places pads on your chest, and sometimes your back, before delivering a controlled electrical shock to restore rhythm.

After Your Cardioversion Procedure

We’ll monitor you closely as your sedation wears off. You may have mild skin irritation or soreness where the pads were placed. Your provider will review results and next steps once you’re awake. Once it’s time to go, you’ll need someone there to drive you home.

The procedure is used to treat certain abnormal heart rhythms—most commonly atrial fibrillation (AFib) and atrial flutter—by restoring a normal rhythm.

No. It is performed with light sedation so you’re comfortable and typically asleep.

The shock itself lasts only moments, but you should expect additional time for check-in, preparation and recovery monitoring.

A TEE may be recommended to confirm there are no blood clots in the heart before restoring a normal rhythm.

Many patients need anticoagulant medication before and after cardioversion to reduce stroke risk. Your provider will give personalized instructions.

You’ll be able to go home the same as your procedure, but you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you.

You may feel tired from sedation and may have mild soreness where the pads were placed. Your Oracle Heart & Vascular provider will review your rhythm and discuss follow-up care and medications.
