Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, according to the CDC, yet many women do not know the warning signs of heart problems. Women often experience different symptoms than men, and risk can increase during life stages such as pregnancy, menopause and times of significant stress. At Oracle Heart & Vascular, we are committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate care for women’s heart health. Our cardiologists focus on helping patients understand their risks, know the signs to look out for and effectively treat heart disease at any stage of a woman’s life.

Why Women’s Heart Health Is Different

Women often develop heart disease later in life than men, but certain risk factors affect women more strongly. Women are also more likely to experience subtle or atypical symptoms, which can delay diagnosis. That’s why early evaluation and awareness for women’s heart health is so important. Women who are at risk have:

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Pregnancy-related complications

  • Hormonal changes during menopause

  • Stress and depression

Women’s Heart Health Conditions We Evaluate And Treat

Our team provides expert evaluation and management for conditions that commonly affect women. We use advanced diagnostic testing and personalized treatment plans to address both current symptoms and long-term risk. Conditions our cardiologists will look for include:

  • Coronary artery disease and angina

  • Heart failure

  • Heart rhythm disorders

  • Cardiomyopathy and stress-related heart conditions

  • High blood pressure and cholesterol disorders

  • Pregnancy-related heart concerns

  • Vascular disease affecting circulation

Recognizing Symptoms In Women

Heart disease symptoms in women are not always the classic chest pain that many men experience. Instead, women may experience any of the following symptoms. If symptoms are new, severe or worsening, you should always schedule an evaluation with our cardiovascular experts.

Heart disease symptoms in women include:

  • Chest pressure, tightness or discomfort

  • Shortness of breath

  • Fatigue or unusual weakness

  • Nausea or indigestion-like discomfort

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Pain in the neck, jaw, shoulders or upper back

Women’s Heart Health FAQs

We aim to help women understand their heart health, manage risk and feel confident in their cardiovascular care. If you have symptoms or known risk factors, early evaluation can make a meaningful difference. Learn more about our women’s heart health below.

Yes. While chest pain is still common, women are more likely to experience symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness or pain in the jaw, neck or back. These subtle symptoms can be mistaken for other conditions, which is why early evaluation is important.

If  you have certain risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking history or a family history of heart disease, you should begin heart risk assessment in early adulthood. Preventative visits for women’s heart health help identify risks before symptoms develop.

After menopause, estrogen levels decrease, which can affect cholesterol levels and blood vessel health. This increases the risk of heart disease in post-menopasual women, making regular cardiovascular screening and lifestyle management especially important.

Yes. Pregnancy-related conditions such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and high blood pressure increase the risk of future heart disease. Women with these histories should receive ongoing cardiovascular monitoring.

Chronic stress can raise blood pressure, contribute to inflammation and increase the risk of heart rhythm problems and heart disease. Managing stress is an important part of women’s heart health.

Reducing your risk often involves controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating a heart-healthy diet, managing stress, and avoiding tobacco.
