Blocked or narrowed blood vessels, whether in the heart, legs or veins, can reduce circulation, cause pain and increase the risk of serious complications such as heart attack, limb ischemia, or DVT complications. At Oracle Heart & Vascular, we offer vascular and coronary stenting procedures that use advanced catheter-based techniques to open narrowed vessels and restore healthy blood flow, often with shorter recovery and less discomfort than traditional surgery. Stenting is a cornerstone treatment in modern cardiovascular care and may be combined with angioplasty to achieve the best possible, and often lifesaving, outcomes.

A stent is a tiny mesh tube that is placed inside a narrowed or blocked blood vessel to help keep it open. In many cases, our interventional cardiologist will first perform a balloon to widen the vessel before deploying the stent to hold the vessel in its expanded position.

Stents are commonly used in arterial disease affecting coronary arteries (those supplying the heart), peripheral arteries (legs and arms), and select cases of venous disease to improve circulation and reduce symptoms.

Coronary stenting is a procedure used to treat coronary artery disease (CAD), a condition in which plaque buildup narrows the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. Reduced blood flow can cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, fatigue and increased risk of heart attack.

While stents are most commonly associated with arteries, venous stents can be beneficial in select cases of venous obstruction or compression. These may occur when veins are narrowed due to scarring from prior clots, external compression or chronic venous disease that contributes to swelling, pain or impacts circulation.

Venous stenting is typically considered after careful imaging evaluation confirms a target lesion contributing to symptoms. It involves guiding a stent to the narrowed vein and expanding the stent to improve flow so blood can move more efficiently back to the heart.

Stenting performed in the Oracle Procedure Suite, our state-of-the-heart outpatient heart lab conveniently located on the first floor on the first floor of our Fredericksburg office. Your procedure will take one to two hours, depending on its complexity.

After your stent placement, you will be monitored while sedation wears off. Vital signs and circulation are checked and most patients go home the same day or after a short observation period. Your provider will discuss medications and follow-up tests. Recovery is usually quick, and many patients notice symptom improvement as blood flow is restored.
