Identifying heart rhythm problems can be challenging. It can be even more difficult if your symptoms occur only occasionally. At Oracle Heart & Vascular, we offer Implantable Loop Recorders (ILRs) to provide continuous, long-term heart rhythm monitoring to help our specialists detect abnormal heartbeats that may not appear during short-term testing. An ILR allows our care team to monitor your heart 24 hours a day for months or even years, leading to more accurate diagnosis and more personalized treatment.
What Are Implantable Loop Recorders?
Implantable Loop Recorders (ILRs) are small heart monitoring devices that are placed just under the skin of your chest in an easy, outpatient procedure. It continuously records the heart’s electrical activity and automatically stores abnormal rhythms for your provider to review. Unlike external monitors that are worn for only a few days or weeks, Implantable Loop Recorders remain in place long-term and are especially helpful for detecting unpredictable or intermittent arrhythmias.
Why Might ILRs Be Recommended?
Because Implantable Loop Recorders continuously monitor your heart, they can capture rhythm changes that traditional tests may miss. An ILR can help your provider determine whether symptoms are related to a heart rhythm issue.
Your Oracle Heart & Vascular provider may recommend an ILR if you experience the following symptoms:
What To Expect During ILR Implantation
This quick outpatient procedure is performed in the convenience of the Oracle Procedural Suite. For your comfort, you’ll receive local anesthesia.
During the procedure, our cardiologist inserts the device just under the skin through a small incision. This typically takes only a few minutes, with no leads or wires placed inside the heart. The ILR is about the size of a USB flash drive, allowing for easy concealment under your clothes.
Recovery After The Procedure
Most patients experience minimal discomfort and are able to return to normal daily activities within one to two days. Your Oracle Heart & Vascular care team will provide instructions on caring for the small incision and when to resume normal routines and activity levels. We will schedule follow-up appointments ahead of time to ensure proper healing and to review early monitoring data.
How Do Implantable Loop Recorders Work?
Once implanted, Implantable Loop Recorders send continuous streams of data. Your provider reviews this information regularly and contacts you if concerning rhythm patterns are detected or if treatment adjustments are needed. Implantable Loop Recorders will also:

The good news is that the device is not noticeable and most patients forget it is even there. You will not feel the device working and it will not interact with most household electronics, including cell phones. You can continue normal exercise, travel and daily routines unless otherwise advised by your provider. Generally, not even security and metal detectors are a problem.
